All Steamed Up - And Ready to Roll

The history of the WF403 can be found here - https://nelsonrailwaysociety.co.nz/wf403

Nelson’s historic steam locomotive WF403 has been lovingly rebuilt by volunteers after more than two decades of meticulous restoration at Founders Park. Built in 1907 and brought to Nelson in 1973, WF403 is the only one of three surviving Wf-class locomotives in Aotearoa to be fully restored—an authentic link to the former Nelson–Glenhope railway and a living piece of our regional heritage.

The team is now focused on the final steps to get WF403 running for the public. To meet air quality rules and keep operations affordable and sustainable, the Society is seeking consent to run the engine on wood rather than coal, followed by a formal boiler re-test. The goal is to host around 15 steam days a year, bringing visitors and locals to see, hear and experience real steam around Founders Park. Community support—through donations and new volunteers—will help fund the consent process and testing so WF403 can move from display to delight. The outlook is positive, with Council actively working with the team to find a practical solution.

If you’re visiting Founders, be sure to help the project by donating.
